Season 3 Wrap-Up

Tuesday, August 24, 2010

Here we are again, at the end of another chapter of the Kanes! This one was certainly the most dramatic so far, and was definitely a *lot* more scripted than the previous seasons, but I think it paid off in the end. There were still a lot of moments that were a total surprise to me, but everything surrounding Travis-Bradley-Emerald was leading up to this point. I'm pretty sure that if I hadn't planned it from the beginning, I never would've been able to do it. Was very hard. :(

However, next season won't be as dark! There'll be a lot to do with the fued between Travis and Brad, Brad coping, yada yada, but I'm pretty sure there's no way to get more depressing than the last few posts I did. No where to go but up from here, basically. :) And, I promise, it'll be a much, much happier ending.

Anyways, there's not much this Season to Wrap-Up persay, but here's the juice:

#2: Machinima - Tips and Tools for the Curious

Firstly, if you want some solid tips on taking in-game footage, I highly highly recommend reading this here blog:
http://pyronium3.blogspot.com/

There's only a few posts, but it covers some really important stuff that will make your life a lot easier!

Now, Chrysame's questions about how I did certain things!

... the car on fire... - This actually wasn't a mod. The "fog emitter" in Ambitions has a craaazy amount of special effects, one of which is called 'firesim', which is the animation when a sim catches on fire. Nice big blaze, all I had to do was place umpteen fog emitters, set their animation, and boom, fire. What was more miraculous is that I was able to place a car on a community lot -- that was a bit more annoying, requiring a mod I installed for 2-seconds that allows buyable cars on community lots.

... placed the police cars ... - The police cars are hidden in buydebug mode (no idea why), and required a mod to unlock. It's the same mod I mentioned previously that unlocks the ability to place community lot picnic areas, as well: http://www.modthesims.info/download.php?t=382062  It's called the 'Recategorizer'. To my glee, as soon as they're placed, they automatically have their lights flashing. I did a little dance when I saw, because there is no way to actually toggle it on-off.

... arranged her body on the ground ... - For this, I used a mod called Chaos Mod Painting (http://www.modthesims.info/download.php?t=356513). It's a little confusing to understand at first, but you can set a sim to do any of numerous animations (not all, unforunately), and one of which is the animation to have a sim pass out from boredom. It has the option to 'pause' an animation as well, so once she collapsed, I paused it, and she was stuck laying down until I said otherwise. It's actually the same animation I used in the Meredith-Chandra murder scene to make them both lie down, as well. Another mod removes the 'zzzz's from the sleeping animation.

... certain emotions and reactions at the right time ... - This is also Chaos Mod Painting. Select an animation (in most of these cases, one of the various 'cry' animations that are available), and set it to loop infinitely. That way, I can wait until the right moment to hit record, make sure I have all my camera swivels set up properly, and have at. Still is a bit tricky, but makes it so, so much easier.

Other tidbits:
* I tried very, very hard to actually set the car on fire (to no avail) so I could have firefighters on the scene putting it out. I even had Sam and Ollie in firefighter gear at the scene, but... Without a fire, they couldn't do much. So they didn't make the final cut of the movie.
* Farah was also originally going to be there! Being doctorly and stuff. However, it just didn't fit. So she didn't make the cut.
* Since Emerald was not actually dead yet when this was filmed: when and how did she die? Well, to give a little closure... Here it is: http://picasaweb.google.com/kaleeko/OldVideos1?authkey=Gv1sRgCKKw2L2M2uXf_QE#5509235470804232994

* And, for kicks and giggles while I'm on the topic of short clips: http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/B83_vC4r-AM_IBXy5SsuQ1ZnvNVwWaNKZQRJ-l21b7A?feat=directlink

It was a lot of experimentation, but it paid off in the end. I'm pretty confident that next time around, I'll be able to put together something much better. Still, I'm really proud of some of the moments in this video. :) My favorite especially is the last shot of Bradley yelling-roaring-raging-whatever in front of the burning vehicle... Such a huge display of emotion from a guy who usually is not very descript about how he feels.

So um, I think that's actually about it! If you have any other questions about this Season, the Machinima, what's to come, etc etc, feel free to ask! Now's the time to do it. :)

I am gonna take a bit of a break between now and the start of next Season, so I can get a bit caught up in my game, maybe do a small 'short', or just have some time to dink around on Guild Wars or Warhammer Online or whatever is striking my fancy. And, so I have more time to focus on spamming y'all's blogs with comments! Bwahahaha!

And now, onwards! :D

Oh! I forgot to add:

Changing a ghost's "type" is done through Chaos Mod Painting as well. It has a "mortality" option on it that allows you to select a tombstone on the lot and set whether the ghost is controllable, what kind of death it had, and even instantaneously make the ghost a live sim again. Very handy.

Nighto, dahlings!

Di Al Martini August 25, 2010 at 1:16 AM

Thanks for sharing the tips. It's really a hard work, and it surely paid off. I am enjoying it very much... even though I'm still feeling sad about it :(

Di Al Martini August 25, 2010 at 1:29 AM

By the way, I tried the car accident in Valentin's story and maybe I could share my experience here?

I also used Chaos Mod Painting to burn the trees around the car and also a carpet which I put under the car. It's a residential lot with lots of pine trees around, bushes, and rocks. That's why the fire spread so fast, and then my sim called the firefighters. There were three firefighters came to the lot. Looks good for photos, but not sure for a machinima. But, I noticed a mod to make a fire, but I forget the name. It's in MTS too, but I am not sure if it can be runned with Ambitions/latest patch.

Di Al Martini August 25, 2010 at 1:33 AM

Off course for this machinima, you needed a fire that won't make a sim panic ;)

Unknown August 25, 2010 at 1:52 AM

It is quite sad. :( Probably even moreso because I caught you all off-guard.

I do remember the car accident from your blog. I was oh-so tempted to ask you about how you did it, but if I did, I'd have revealed what I was doing, and I wanted it to be a surprise. Thanks for sharing that with me, I'll keep it in mind for the future. I did try setting some things on fire with Chaos Mod, but it was being uncooperative. I ended up just giving up after a while.

And haha, yes, I definitely needed them not to panic. With free will off I believe they wouldn't, but I'm not 100% positive.

OH. Also, another tip:

The one shot at the very beginning of the machinima where Emerald was actually inside the car: I used Twallan's DebugEnabler to actually put her inside the car while it was parked. Could be useful to know just for shots of people sitting in parked cars. :)

PiB - Nicarra August 25, 2010 at 2:02 AM

I can definitely see why you were spending so long on it. It was an stunning piece of work and not only because it was so unexpected. One moment, she's driving off to talk to someone and the next time she's gone.

Damn,nearly cried again...

Di Al Martini August 25, 2010 at 2:13 AM

My sympathy is for Brad, but I bet the next thing happens to him is going to be very interesting. I hope..

PiB - Nicarra August 25, 2010 at 2:16 AM

I bet a HUGE portion of Kaleeko's audience adopts Bradley just to be extra nice to him. I know I want to.

Di Al Martini August 25, 2010 at 2:25 AM

PiB, your blog once got really sad too. And I am still remember it until now. The time when River died...and not just that, Sam found bad lucks after it.

Di Al Martini August 25, 2010 at 2:29 AM

Kaleeko, so many mods you got there. I really like the sharing tips.
For the story, Bradley is very clever, there are so many options in his life. I wonder if he will ever forgive his brother, or himself.

Unknown August 25, 2010 at 2:38 AM

"I bet a HUGE portion of Kaleeko's audience adopts Bradley just to be extra nice to him. I know I want to."

I would NOT be surprised. In fact, I encourage it. Please, love on Bradley. Give him happiness! Make it so he never knows what his life would have been had he been in my control...

I was really inclined to drop more hints about how she was driving away to her doom, but I don't think it would've been as easy to sympathize with the characters if I hadn't. Everyone found out about her death at the same time. It was a bit of work, but I think it means the next one will go a lot smoother, since I'll actually know what I'm doing!

And MJ: I have a ridiculous amount of mods. I'd really like to get rid of some to make my game run a little faster, but so help me I can't even find one I'd be willing to part with.

It's funny, because I don't even like CC hair-clothes-etc. I just like mods. Hm!

Di Al Martini August 25, 2010 at 3:03 AM

Large amount of mod would kill my game. I usually throw them after I used them; or put them in a temporary folder when not using it, including the CC, clothes, etc. They often bring issues within the game if too many.

I'll be watching for the next machinima or update from the Kane Family.

PiB - Nicarra August 25, 2010 at 3:17 AM

MJ, that was true that my blog turned very sad for poor Sam. But that was a random game event, not scripted. Between River and the burglar, if Sam could have died from depression, he would have. It's the only time I ever had to watch any version of Sam to be sure the toddler got the attention she needed because he wasn't in a fit state to do anything.

As for the Kane family, Bradley is definitely getting some lovin' and Jeb is still standing by for the next time I need a standin for Sam. :)

Dee August 25, 2010 at 6:19 AM

I watched those two little videos and Amelia is so cute sneaking little taste of the muffins.

That was a lot of work you went through to make that.

Unknown August 25, 2010 at 12:49 PM

MJ, the mods do really slow down my game -- Chaos Mod especially, I crash quite frequently when trying to use it -- but, as with Chaos Mod, I find the second I uninstall it, the second I need it for something.

I still need to go back and read that story about River. That sounds like something really worth reading.

Oh, and PiB-- If you find a time where you REALLY need to torture a sim... Make sure to use Travis. I'm sure everyone wants to see a voodoo doll practiced on him. :P

I really love all the clips I have of Amelia! I think I have some as a toddler, some of her working on homework... Not sure why, she's just so cute I hit record every now and then.

It was a bit of work, but it was actually a lot more work learning how to do it than anything else. Next time, it'll be a lot easier. I can't wait. :) They take effort, but are fun to do!

Unknown August 25, 2010 at 1:04 PM

Oh, and Chrysame: I love TSS! It's awesome! It's like, a facebook for Sims players! Thank you so much for sharing the link with me!!

Anonymous,  August 25, 2010 at 1:13 PM

I knew you'd fit right in there. I know why Kaleeko likes redheads!

I don't post there much but I lurk quite often. They're a good group of folks.

Unknown August 25, 2010 at 1:25 PM

It's great! *does a little dance* I may never go to the official forums again.

I have to agree, everything I've seen so far is great. No trolls, no immaturity, everyone's constructive and supportive. Very cool.

And, just a note about my hair -- it's not naturally red. I just dye it because I reallyreallyreally want to be a redhead. In fact, I've been dyeing it so long, I don't remember what I look like with my natural haircolor. >.> It suits me a lot better than washed out blonde, anyways.

Anonymous,  August 25, 2010 at 1:28 PM

Psst, I was a redhead for years. Then went back to my natural color, now I'm red again about to switch back to the dark brown.

Now, enjoy, mingle with the folks. Promote Desperate Sims! I haven't promoted any of my stuff there. Maybe one day. Eh.

I think all of you would enjoy the site. *sends everyone to The Simmers Society*

Unknown August 25, 2010 at 1:37 PM

Ooo, fun! I never thought I'd enjoy having my hair dyed, but I'm almost scared to not be red anymore, I like it too much. I'm thinking about going blonde again for a bit for kicks and giggles. It's nice to shake things up every now and then.

I'm starting to mingle. :D I did post my machinima up, so much love already! I didn't get one comment on the official forums. I've gotten about 10, on TSS. Less population really is so much better for some things.

And yes, after trying this out, I definitely have to recommend it to. :D

PiB - Nicarra August 25, 2010 at 2:28 PM

Travis for torture - nah, I'm sure other Brad fans will cover that one.

Spent a good part of play time last night setting up a copy of Brad and Em as married adults then exported to bin. Moved bin copy to Jack's game, one instant baby (boy - Jamal - I think James may suit better) and there is a little girl on the way. When she is born, reexport to the bin as the family that will move into Phillip and Vanessa's neighborhood.

TSS? I know some of the other forums are easier than others.

Unknown August 25, 2010 at 2:45 PM

Awww. All you guys that make Brad-Emerald copies need to make sure to take screenshots for me. I'll be sure to hide them from Bradley 1.0.

TSS/The Simmers Society (http://www.simmerssociety.net/) It's very facebook-esque. Easy to set up, very social atmosphere.

PiB - Nicarra August 25, 2010 at 2:51 PM

Once they move into Phillip's neighborhood and a bit more stable, they will get photos. Right now, they will be working away on getting that family ready for me while I play with Jack. :)

PiB - Nicarra August 25, 2010 at 2:59 PM

Oh, and Brad scared me when I grew him to adult. He looks stunningly like his Da if he grows into the same hairstyle and you put specs on him.

mmmcheezy225 August 25, 2010 at 7:34 PM

Ahaha, I kind of want to join TSS now! And I've never played Guild Wars, but I have seen The Guild. Best youtube web show ever. Anyway, enjoy your break, and I'm super excited for the next season! :D Cool machinima tips, too. I'd try them out if my computer didn't hate me so much. :P

Unknown August 25, 2010 at 8:38 PM

Brad is practically a carbon copy of Jeb, same as Travis is a copy of Meredith. Genetically, that is. Amelia is the only one that seemed to get a pretty decent blend, but she still looks very much like Meredith.

I agree mmmcheezy, The Guild is absolutely amazing (my guild in WAR actually calls me Codex because I'm so neurotic). Between that and Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along-Blog (equally as awesome, watch it if you haven't!), Felicia Day has become one of my favorite actresses.

I have a pretty decent computer, but it still doesn't take very smooth footage. :-/ But that may also be because I tried to save on computer space by choosing a lower quality. Will have to see next time I work on a vid.

PiB - Nicarra August 25, 2010 at 9:49 PM

I might not have noticed how Brad is like Jeb except for a) Thomas's play day and b) the time I took Jeb to the stylist to see what he looked like with a few different looks. Brad grew up with the crew cut so it was really obvious that he's a near clone of dad.

Haven't watched The Guild or Dr Horrible - I gots no culture.

Unknown August 26, 2010 at 10:39 AM

I mess around a lot in CAS when I'm bored. ;) Let's just say, if Amelia looked any more like her daddy than she does, she would *not* be cute. Also, you should definitely watch Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog when you have the time. It is 100% worth it.

So, in my game last night, SP pulled something reaaallly annoying... but I've decided to roll with it. No spoilers yet, but it'll be near the beginning of S4 so you won't have to wait long to hear about it.

Also, mainly for PiB, since you mentioned this -- I unhid the rest of the screenshot albums from this season.

PiB - Nicarra August 26, 2010 at 2:57 PM

I'll have to go to Dr Horrible over the weekend (Friday, glorious end of week).

SP and annoying outcomes, why am I not surprised that SP did something annoying.

I finally watched the video again. Still stunned by it. Still stunned that you could do that. Then bemused myself by thinking - I could never separate young love like that but bonded in death... hmm, Romeo and Juliet maybe...

Unknown August 26, 2010 at 5:20 PM

You can watch the whole thing (Dr Horrible) on youtube, but one of these days I need to buy the whole thing for myself so I can watch it on the TV.

Haha, let's just say I had some things set improperly on SP and I switched households for 3 secs unpaused (no joke) and it up and pulled a stupid. It's nothing TOO major, and I've actually got some ideas with it to play along over the course of next season. Even when things go wrong, they can be interesting!

It was very hard, PiB, but in a way, it's sort of my rebellion against... Oh, I dunno. There seems to be this 'cliche' among legacies that everyone meets their sweetheart as a teen, or at least has one baby before their lover dies off. There certainly are a lot of instances otherwise, but this is my as-opposite-as-it-can-get response to the norm. ;) I think the reason it's not done a lot is because it IS really hard. What sim player doesn't want to see their sim live happily under after, usually?

[/ramble]

Anonymous,  August 26, 2010 at 5:26 PM

Dr. Horrible is one of the best things ever. Watch it!

I was going to say I hate the teen meets the love of their life cliche then I realized I met my husband when I was still a teen so...um...nevermind!

Unknown August 26, 2010 at 5:40 PM

Hahaha! Technically I did too, Chrysame. ;)

I think it just bothers me because it happens in almost every single legacy I read. I think that's one reason I'm so drawn to all you guys' blogs, you don't really tend to follow cliches like that!

I actually used to do it constantly in my game as well, and I understand why it's so easy to do, but every time I read yet another, "Oh, I met the most HANDsome boy in school today" + 3 post later "Oh em gee best wedding ever!!", I will need to run to PiB's short story blog and soak myself in some non-conventional threesome action. ;D Hahahahaha.

Unknown August 26, 2010 at 5:45 PM

Oh, re-read the post! I added a 'Guess Who' section.

This is what Twallan's Mods + Boredom breeds. XD

PiB - Nicarra August 26, 2010 at 5:49 PM

guess who - Travis and Jeb as females.

PiB - Nicarra August 26, 2010 at 5:51 PM

"I will need to run to PiB's short story blog and soak myself in some non-conventional threesome action" speaking of which, did you guys want the occasional update of the threesome as they wander their way through life. I will return since I want to see AJ/Thomas's baby and then Sam will insist on adopting a child to save one from the system. :)

PiB - Nicarra August 26, 2010 at 5:54 PM

Kaleeko, I think one of the reasons that we aren't as prone to the cliches is just that we don't do legacies properly. :)

I miss Candi and the uglacies - I think her computer had another meltdown, she hasn't updated in forever...maybe I need to check the Sims 2 site.

Unknown August 26, 2010 at 6:05 PM

"did you guys want the occasional update of the threesome as they wander their way through life. I will return since I want to see AJ/Thomas's baby and then Sam will insist on adopting a child to save one from the system."

Sure, PiB. If it'd be tedious though, don't worry about it. I know you've got a lot on your plate. ;) However, you seem to like juggling things, so if you're up to it, I know I'd like it.

Maybe I just don't really like legacies. >.> I dunno. I don't tend to follow them unless they have something unique going on. DITF legacies are cool since they actual promote story, but I have to say my least favorite is rainbowcies. I'm just not that into the whole color thing... Outside of the original Berry stuff, that is. But that's because she's a great writer, not because her sims are technicolor. ;)

Oh, and the guesses: Close! First is Amelia as a redhead, second is Travis as a girl, third is Bradley as a girl. Looks like Amelia got Mere's lips after all, dangnabbit.

PiB - Nicarra August 26, 2010 at 6:15 PM

I have a page in that blog already - a draft where I can slowly add pics as I visit them from time to time. :)

DITF? Not sure I know them.

I did read Berry for 3 gens then I just stopped. I don't know why exactly.

But for excellent reading
http://thesims2.ea.com/mysimpage/uploads.php?user_id=1501957&nstart=1&asset_type=story

Go back to the start and read Candi's stories. It may be sims 2 but you won't regret a minute of it.

Unknown August 26, 2010 at 6:27 PM

Well, have at, then! I know I'd like to see it.

DITF - Difference in the Family legacy. Each generation is preordained to a certain career and certain achievement goals, like 'Must divorce one sim' or something like that. I don't have the rules onhand, but they're interesting.

I'll be sure to save the link and check it out soon. :) I always like having new good material to read.

And, I was wrong about me being wrong - Amelia does have Jeb's lips, I forgot his are the wonky ones. I added a picture of Meredith (original) and Jebidiah (as a girl) for comparison.

I have way too much fun with this!

PiB - Nicarra August 27, 2010 at 1:25 AM

If anyone wants a Bradley and Emerald to be kind to, I uploaded Brad, Em, a baby boy James and Em is preggie.

http://www.thesims3.com/assetDetail.html?assetId=2999798

Be kind to the poor guy. :) Or not.

Deema316 August 27, 2010 at 6:00 PM

Yep, that the same old dee following with the pixelated picture.

I must say, I'm glad jeb isn't a female.

mmmcheezy225 August 27, 2010 at 8:58 PM

Is it just me, or does female Jeb look a lot like what Farah would look like if she were younger and blonde?

Unknown August 27, 2010 at 9:21 PM

They are very, very similar, mmmcheezy. I think the look suited Farah better because of her dark colorings, since the genes are heavily Egyptian which doesn't look right on someone pale and blonde.

She wasn't exactly the most beautiful Sim, though. She did have her moments, but those genes definitely look better on a male. ^^

Jen August 28, 2010 at 9:41 PM

Oh gosh, I'm so sorry for such a late reply on your wrap up!

So much cool stuff you have posted here - tips, tools, links! - so kind of you to share with us. :)

I haven't really tested out Ambitions much. The fog emitter sounds very cool and so perfect for what you needed it for.
Police car with flashing lights may come in use for me soon with my story. ;)
I am still testing the waters with this Chaos mod. Your right on it being confusing. Plus it makes my game run really slow.

Very cute clip of Amelia at her muffin stall. She's such a little sweetie and I look forward to seeing her become a teen soon.

Those pics you have recently posted here are too funny! Travis was always going to look like Meredith, Bradley as a girl though..argh! Too much like Jeb.. and that goes for Jeb as a girl too...argh! lol

Looking forward to the next season and seeing what you have install for your readers and the Kanes. They are one unique family and am loving reading about them. :)

PiB - Nicarra August 28, 2010 at 11:14 PM

I've had Bradley and Emerald in my town for a few days now and I'm instantly happy when I happen across Brad happily wandering around town. Emerald isn't getting out as much due to a pregnancy but now that Abbey is born, I expect I'd see her more.

They are nearly ready to be packed up to move to their long term neighborhood - neighbors to Phillip and Vanessa Grant. They need a third baby though, that neighborhood needs an infusion of fresh genetics.

Unknown August 28, 2010 at 11:24 PM

No problem, Jen. :) The wrap-up isn't important, but I like doing them since it gives me a good opportunity to answer any questions.

I think I'm going to start up again on Monday, though Sun/Mon are my hubbies days off, so I may not have as much time to write as I'd like to. We'll have to see. Wednesday for next post at the latest.

Awww, I'm glad to hear that, PiB -- warms my heart that they're living happy lives elsewhere. Make them have as many babies as you want! I look forward to seeing them in the blog, whenever they decide to pop up.

PiB - Nicarra August 28, 2010 at 11:47 PM

You can see a lot of family history if you look at the hidden traits of Bradley and his babies.
Burglar - Dad was a crim
Pizza Appreciation - I believe you said that Farah had a baby with the pizza guy?
Can salute - Military blood at some point.
Can Apprehend Burglar - Cop blood at some point.

Damn, no firemen in their history. You need one! LOL

Unknown August 29, 2010 at 12:39 AM

Haha, that's cool you noticed that, PiB. :)

Pizza Appreciation - Jeb's Dad
Can Salute - Jeb's Grandmother Kaylee Kane
Can Apprehend Burglar - Kaylee Kane's Grandfather

Still working on the rest. :) I was planning to have Farah have a baby with a fireman initially, but I couldn't get any male firefighters to the house. Oh well. I'll get one eventually. And a maid. ;)

PiB - Nicarra August 29, 2010 at 12:54 AM

I briefly switched households and noticed that Bradley can Sneak places. I'm not sure that he needs to but he has the option.

James and Abbey are toddlers now. Should be packaging the family up (again) for their big move to a permanent town.

Unknown August 31, 2010 at 7:10 PM

50 comments? Just... *laugh* We can be chatty cathy's sometimes, can't we?

Sorry about the slowness of getting back on top of updates. I've got a lot of things going atm and I'm terrible at time management. I'll be working on it tonight, but may not have a new post until sometime late tomorrow-ish.

Deema316 August 31, 2010 at 7:20 PM

I'll be reading whenever you get it uploaded and am watching for it.
I do fine with time management at work but am terrible at home. I have to use part of my vacations just to get caught up here.
